Shopping English: How to Ask About Price, Sales & Discounts

Learn practical English phrases for asking prices, checking sales, understanding discounts, confirming tax, and verifying the final price.

THE BIG IDEA: Ask for the total before you decide.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. How much is this?
  2. Is this on sale?
  3. What’s the sale price?
  4. Is there a discount?
  5. Is there a cheaper one?
  6. Is tax included?
  7. How much is it after the discount?
  8. Why is the price different?
  9. Can you check the price?
  10. Is this the final price?

Use the Four Finger Rule

PRICE → SALE → DISCOUNT → CONFIRM

A sale sign can start a conversation, but it does not answer every question. Ask about the specific item, check the discount, and repeat the final amount.

Put it together

“How much is this jacket?” “Is tax included?” “So that’s the final price, right?”
