THE BIG IDEA: Own the mistake. Explain the fix. Follow through.
1. I made a mistake on ___ .
Own the issue clearly.
2. That was my error.
Short and direct.
3. I understand what went wrong.
Shows awareness.
4. Here’s how I’m fixing it.
Moves toward the solution.
5. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Use only when you can reasonably follow through.

Use the phrase for a real situation
You notice that you sent the wrong file or entered the wrong information. The best response is short, honest, and solution-focused.
Prepare before the conversation
Before you speak, take a few seconds and use the Four Finger Rule:
- WANT TO: What do I want to accomplish?
- HAVE TO: What information do I have to give?
- NEED TO: What do I need from the other person?
- MIGHT: What could change, go wrong, or require clarification?
You do not need to memorize a full conversation. Prepare the situation, the first line, and one backup phrase.
Keep your English clear
Short sentences are often stronger at work because they reduce confusion. If you do not understand, ask. If you are unsure, confirm. If you make a mistake, focus on the solution.
Stop memorizing English. Start using it.
