🗣️ Example Conversation
🧑 Supervisor: Welcome to the team. I’m Alex.
👷 New Worker: Nice to meet you. I’m Colin. It’s my first day.
🧑 Supervisor: Today you’ll work with Jordan in the loading area.
👷 New Worker: Great. Can you show me where I should put my equipment?
🧑 Supervisor: Yes. Put it in the locker beside the office.
👷 New Worker: Do I need gloves and eye protection for this job?
🧑 Supervisor: Yes. Jordan will show you the required safety equipment.
👷 New Worker: Perfect. Please let me know if I miss anything.
🤝 Meeting Your Team
“Hi, I’m new here. What’s your name?”
“What department do you work in?”
“How long have you been with the company?”
“Who will I be working with today?”
“Who should I ask if I need help?”
“It’s nice to meet everyone.”
Learn the names of the people you work with most often, especially your supervisor, trainer, and the person responsible for safety.
❓ Asking About the Job
“What should I do first?”
“Where should I put this?”
“When does this need to be finished?”
“Is this the correct tool?”
“Could you demonstrate that one more time?”
“Should I do this by myself or with someone?”
“What should I do when I’m finished?”
🦺 Safety and Instructions
“What safety equipment do I need?”
“Is it safe to enter this area?”
“Where is the emergency exit?”
“Who should I report this problem to?”
“Should I stop the equipment first?”
“Let me repeat the instructions to make sure I understand.”
Never guess when a task involves equipment, chemicals, heights, vehicles, electricity, water, confined spaces, or another serious hazard. Stop and ask the responsible supervisor or trained worker.
☕ Building Good Relationships
“How is your day going?”
“Do you usually take lunch at noon?”
“Would you like to grab coffee later?”
“Thanks for showing me how to do that.”
“Let me know if you need a hand.”
“I appreciate your help today.”
Being reliable, respectful, willing to learn, and ready to help matters more than speaking perfect English.
👂 If You Do Not Understand
“Could you say that again more slowly?”
“Could you show me instead?”
“Do you mean I should do this now?”
“Can I repeat that to make sure I understand?”
“I understand the first step, but not the second.”
“Who can I ask if I have another question?”
🔧 Problem → Need → Request
Problem: You understand the job, but you are unsure about one safety step.
Need: You need the supervisor to demonstrate the safe procedure again.
Request: “I understand the task, but I’m not sure about this safety step. Could you show me again, please?”
Quick Tip ✅
Repeat important instructions back in your own words.
It shows that you are listening and gives your supervisor a chance to correct any misunderstanding.
