Your phone battery is almost dead and you are sitting in a café, waiting at a station or travelling somewhere unfamiliar.
You can see an outlet, but you are not sure whether customers are allowed to use it.
You only need one simple question:
“Can I charge my phone here?”
スマホの充電が少なくなったとき、難しい英語は必要ありません。
まずはシンプルに聞いてみましょう。
「ここでスマホを充電できますか?」
The important habit is simple:
ask before you plug in.
Some outlets are available for customers and some are not.
“Sure. That’s fine.”
Great. Find out where the outlet is and keep your cable out of the way.
“Sorry, not that outlet.”
No problem. Ask:
“Is there another outlet I can use?”

Customer:
“Excuse me. Can I charge my phone here?”
お客さん:
「すみません。ここでスマホを充電できますか?」
Staff:
“Sure. There’s an outlet beside that table.”
Customer:
“Great. Is it okay if I use it for about twenty minutes?”
Staff:
“That’s fine. Just please keep the cable out of the walkway.”
Customer:

Notice that the customer does not simply plug the phone in.

“Sure. There’s an outlet over there.”
“Sorry, that outlet isn’t for customers.”
“We don’t have any outlets available.”

A few useful answers
Can I just say “charger”?
If you are asking for permission, a complete question is clearer:
“Can I plug in my charger?”
What if I cannot see an outlet?
Ask:
“Is there an outlet I can use?”
or
“Do you have a charging station?”
What if they say no?
Keep it easy:
“No problem. Thank you.”
You can then ask whether another charging area is available.
What if my battery is almost dead?
You can explain:
“Sorry, my battery is almost dead. Is there somewhere I can charge my phone?”
