Could You Take a Photo for Us? Everyday English for Asking Someone to Take a Picture

Want everyone in the travel photo? Learn practical English for asking a stranger to take a picture, giving simple instructions, checking the photo and thanking them.

Three German travellers ask someone to take a group photo during a trip.

You finally have all three friends together in front of the perfect landmark — but somebody has to take the picture.
Start with one polite request:
“Excuse me, could you take a photo for us?”

Wenn alle zusammen auf das Foto sollen, kannst du auf Englisch höflich fragen:
“Could you take a photo for us?”
Auf Deutsch bedeutet das:
„Könnten Sie ein Foto von uns machen?“

Once the person agrees, keep your instructions simple.
You may want the landmark in the background, everyone inside the frame, or one extra photo just in case.

“Sure, no problem.”

Great. Hand them the phone and explain anything important:
“Could you get the whole building in the picture?”

“Sorry, I’m in a hurry.”

No problem. Smile and say:
“No worries. Thanks anyway.”

A few useful answers

Should I say “Can you” or “Could you”?

Both are correct.
“Could you” sounds slightly softer and is a great choice when asking a stranger for a favour.

Is “Take a photo of us” natural?

Yes, but as a direct command it can sound abrupt.
Turn it into a polite question:
“Could you take a photo of us?”

What if I want several pictures?

Ask after the first one:
“Could you take one more?”
If you want a different angle, explain it briefly before the next photo.

What if someone asks me to take their photo?

Say:
“Sure!”
Then ask:
“Is this okay?”
or
“Would you like another one?”
