GRIFTER’S TALES

THE GRIFTER’S CODE

By Colin Lee MacLeod

“Help yourself by helping other people more.” That is the wording. That is the starting point.

A principle that travels

I have worked in teaching, construction, hospitality, and at sea. I have lived in Japan and on the coast of British Columbia. Those experiences do not fit neatly into one job description, but there is a thread that keeps showing up: finding a way to be useful.

The Grifter’s Code puts that thread into a sentence: help yourself by helping other people more. I use “grifter” here for someone who can adapt, learn, connect, and make a situation work—not as permission to cheat anyone.

Useful can be ordinary

Sometimes helping means explaining something in a way another person can use. Sometimes it means cooking a meal, finding the right tool, or listening long enough to understand the problem. A useful contribution does not have to look impressive from the outside.

The Four Finger Rule came from trying to help reluctant language learners get a quick win. The travel guides come from going out, noticing what works, and sharing the experience. These stories come from the same impulse: turn something lived into something another person can use.

Keep the people in it

Being adaptable should not mean treating people as steps on a ladder. It means being able to sit down, talk, work, and learn across different situations. You still have to show respect. You still have to do the work.

This collection is where I want to keep testing that principle against real days. Some tales are funny. Some are practical. Some will need more time to tell. The code gives them a common direction.

Grifter’s Takeaway

Ask what would actually help, then do the useful thing you can do.
