GRIFTER’S TALES

VANCOUVER ISLAND · THE CROSSING

By Colin Lee MacLeod

Getting across is one thing. Enjoying the crossing is another.

Two different experiences

My Hullo crossing was smooth, and the downtown connection was convenient. It was also crowded and indoors. Those things can all be true at once: useful transport, a good crossing, and still not quite my favourite way to spend the journey.

I prefer the BC Ferries experience when I want an open deck, something to eat, and a quieter place to settle. For me, being able to step outside is part of the pleasure.

The trip includes the water

I spend working days on boats, and I still value a crossing with room to look around. A journey does not become wasted time just because it takes longer. Sometimes that space is what I want from the day.

This is a personal preference from my trip, not a timetable or a fare comparison. The convenient option has its place. So does choosing the journey that gives you a little more room to breathe.

Grifter’s Takeaway

Choose the crossing that suits your day. Sometimes the journey is part of what you came for.
