Travel English: How to Ask for Directions

Learn practical English phrases for asking directions, finding places, using a map, and confirming where to go while traveling.

THE BIG IDEA: Ask for one destination and confirm the next turn.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. Excuse me.
  2. How do I get to ___?
  3. Can you show me on the map?
  4. Is it far from here?
  5. Can I walk there?
  6. Which way is it?
  7. Do I turn left or right?
  8. Is it near ___?
  9. Am I going the right way?
  10. Can you repeat that more slowly?

Use the Four Finger Rule

ASK → PLACE → DIRECTION → CONFIRM

Start with “Excuse me” to get someone’s attention politely. Name the place, show a map if useful, then check the direction you understood. A short follow-up is better than walking away unsure.

Put it together

“Excuse me. How do I get to the station? Can you show me on the map? So I turn left here?”
