Taxi & Rideshare English: How to Explain Where You’re Going

Learn practical English phrases for giving a taxi or rideshare driver your destination, arranging pickup, asking about the route, and paying.

THE BIG IDEA: Give the destination, agree on pickup, and confirm the route.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. I’m going to…
  2. Could you take me to this address?
  3. Can you pick me up at…?
  4. Where should I wait?
  5. How long will it take?
  6. Is this the fastest route?
  7. Can you drop me off here?
  8. Could you stop at the next corner?
  9. Is this the right address?
  10. Can I pay by card?

Use the Four Finger Rule

DESTINATION → PICKUP → ROUTE → CONFIRM

An address is more precise than a place name when several places have similar names. Show the destination if needed and confirm where to meet. Ask about payment when it is relevant to the service you are using.

Put it together

“Could you take me to this address? Where should I wait? Is this the right address?”
