Travel Money English: Prices, Discounts & Payment Phrases

Learn practical English phrases for asking prices, checking discounts, paying by cash or card, confirming charges, and requesting receipts while traveling.

THE BIG IDEA: Check the price and payment method before paying.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. How much is this?
  2. Is that the total price?
  3. Is there a discount?
  4. How much is the discount?
  5. Do you have anything cheaper?
  6. Can I pay by card?
  7. Do you take cash?
  8. Can I tap?
  9. Did the payment go through?
  10. Can I get a receipt?

Use the Four Finger Rule

PRICE → DISCOUNT → PAYMENT → CONFIRM

“Total” means the complete amount you are being asked to pay. “Tap” refers to contactless payment. If a terminal message is unclear, ask whether the payment went through before trying again.

Put it together

“Is that the total price? Can I pay by card? Did the payment go through? Can I get a receipt?”
