A real conversation

Fictional practice dialogue / 会話例

Friend:
“Do you know which train we need?”

You:
“Give me a sec. I just need to check the map.”

Friend:
“Sure, no problem.”

You:
“Thanks for waiting. Okay, we need platform three.”

Notice the three-part pattern:
ask for time → give a short reason → continue the conversation.

Problem → Need → Request

Problem:
Someone needs an answer, but I need a few seconds.

Need:
I need time to check something.

Request:
“Give me a sec. Let me just check.”

Before you use it

  • Decide whether the situation is casual or polite.
  • Ask for only the amount of time you actually need.
  • Give a short reason if it helps the other person understand.
  • Return to the conversation instead of leaving the person waiting.
  • Thank them if they had to wait.

Thanks for waiting.”
