English at the Barber: How to Explain the Haircut You Want

Can I show you a picture?
Can I show you a picture?写真をお見せしてもいいですか?

A haircut is a surprisingly serious English conversation. “Just a little off” sounds easy until you realize that your “little” and the barber’s “little” might be different. You do not need a speech. You need a picture, a few clear words and the confidence to check before the scissors get busy.

The Big Idea

Show what you want, explain what should stay the same, and ask one confirmation question before the haircut begins.

Real Conversation — Fictional Roleplay

CUSTOMER: “Hi! Can I show you a picture of what I'd like?”

BARBER: “Sure. What would you like to change?”

CUSTOMER: “I'd like a trim, but please leave some length on top.”

BARBER: “And the sides?”

CUSTOMER: “Could you make them a little shorter and blend them into the top?”

BARBER: “Got it. Let me confirm how much you want taken off.”

CUSTOMER: “Thanks. I don't want it too short.”

Remember: Show how much length to keep with your fingers or a photo. Ask the barber to confirm before the first cut.

Please leave some length on top.
Please leave some length on top.上は長さを少し残してください。

Problem → Need → Request

Problem: I know the haircut I want, but I cannot describe it clearly.

Need: I need a simple way to explain the top, sides and length.

Request: “Can I show you a picture, and could we confirm how much you will trim?”

Before You Go

  • Save one clear photo showing the style you want
  • Know what you want to keep longer
  • Think about the sides, top, fringe and back separately
  • Decide what you definitely do not want
  • Be ready to ask for a mirror before you leave
Could you make the sides a little shorter?
Could you make the sides a little shorter?横をもう少し短くできますか?

3-Round Speaking Mission

  1. Round 1: Say “Can I show you a picture?” without reading it.
  2. Round 2: Add a length request and one thing you do not want.
  3. Round 3: Pretend the barber asks “How short?” and answer clearly.

Surprise round: The barber says “Same as last time?” but it is your first visit. Respond without pretending they know your usual style.

Natural-English note: “A trim” is not an exact measurement. Pair it with a picture, a small amount or another clear reference.
