Laundromat English: What to Say When the Washer Will Not Start

Is this washer available?
Is this washer available?この洗濯機は空いていますか?

The clothes are in, the detergent is ready, and the washer has decided today is not the day. If English is not your first language, even asking how a laundry machine works can feel awkward. Here is a much easier plan: find out how to pay, explain what is happening and ask the attendant for help.

The Big Idea

You do not need to fix the washer. You need to describe the problem, ask what the machine accepts and confirm the next step.

Real Conversation — Fictional Roleplay

CUSTOMER: “Excuse me, does this washer take coins or a card?”

ATTENDANT: “This one takes a card.”

CUSTOMER: “Thanks. I paid, but it won't start.”

ATTENDANT: “Is there a message on the screen?”

CUSTOMER: “Yes. It says “Out of Order.””

ATTENDANT: “Let me check the machine and explain your options.”

CUSTOMER: “Thank you. What should I do with my clothes now?”

Remember: Ask the attendant before paying a second time. Payment and refund procedures vary by location.

Problem → Need → Request

Problem: I paid for a washer, but the machine will not start.

Need: I need help understanding the error and my options.

Request: “Could you check the machine and tell me what I should do next?”

Before You Go

  • Check the laundry care labels on your clothes
  • Bring the payment method accepted by that laundromat
  • Know which machine number you used
  • Note the error message, if one appears
  • Ask staff before moving clothes or attempting any repair

3-Round Speaking Mission

  1. Round 1: Ask about the machine and payment method.
  2. Round 2: Explain the problem in one short sentence.
  3. Round 3: Give the attendant the machine number and ask what comes next.

Surprise round: The attendant says the machine is temporarily unavailable. Ask about a different machine and any payment already taken.

Natural-English note: “Washer” means washing machine; “dryer” dries clothes. “Cycle” is the complete wash or drying program.
