Rental Car English: Pickup, Insurance, Fuel & Returns

Learn practical English for renting a car, asking about insurance, deposits, fuel policies, damage, mileage, and returns.

THE BIG IDEA: Ask what is included and confirm the return details.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. I have a reservation.
  2. What documents do you need?
  3. Is insurance included?
  4. Is there a deposit?
  5. What is the fuel policy?
  6. Is mileage unlimited?
  7. Where is the car?
  8. There is already a scratch here.
  9. What time do I need to return it?
  10. Where do I return the keys?

Use the Four Finger Rule

CAR → COST → RULES → RETURN

A deposit, an insurance charge, and the rental price are different things. Ask staff to explain each item you do not understand. Point out existing damage clearly and ask how it will be recorded.

Put it together

“I have a reservation. Is insurance included? What is the fuel policy? What time do I need to return it?”
