THE BIG IDEA: Confirm the ticket, platform, and destination before boarding.
Ten phrases to practise
- I’d like a ticket to ___.
- One-way or return?
- What time is the next train?
- Which platform does it leave from?
- Is this the train to ___?
- Is this an express train?
- Do I need a reservation?
- Where is my seat?
- Do I need to change trains?
- What stop do I get off at?
Use the Four Finger Rule
DESTINATION → TICKET → PLATFORM → CONFIRM
“One-way or return?” is a question a ticket seller may ask you. Answer “One-way, please” or “A return ticket, please.” An express train may skip stops, so ask whether it stops at your destination.
Put it together
“I’d like a ticket to Central Station.” “One-way or return?” “One-way, please. Which platform does it leave from?”
