Airport English: Gate Changes, Boarding & Final Calls

Your flight's gate has changed, boarding has started or you've heard a final call. Learn what airport announcements mean, how to ask staff for help and how to confirm you're heading to the right gate.

Airport English lesson showing travellers checking flight gates, boarding announcements and departure information.

Airport English · Boarding announcements · Real-life speaking

Your gate has changed. What should you say?

You’re waiting for your flight when the announcement suddenly mentions a different gate. Or your boarding group is called, but you’re not sure whether it’s your turn. You don’t need to guess. Check the board, find the correct gate, listen for your boarding group, and ask about any final call.

Start with: “Excuse me, has the gate for my flight changed?”

Check the latest gate

“Is this still the right gate for flight 418?”

Always check your flight number and destination, not just the gate printed on your boarding pass.

Know when to board

“Has Group 3 started boarding yet?”

Boarding groups and priority rules vary by airline. Listen for the group or zone shown on your pass.

Ten useful airport phrases

What to say When to use it
“Has the gate for my flight changed?” You heard a gate-change announcement.
“Which gate should I go to?” You need to find the correct gate.
“Where is Gate D8?” You need directions in the terminal.
“Is flight 418 boarding here?” You want to verify the flight at the gate.

Example conversation: the gate has moved

Traveller: Excuse me, has the gate for flight 418 to Vancouver changed?

Airport staff: Yes. It has moved from Gate C12 to Gate D8.

Traveller: Thanks. Could you tell me where Gate D8 is?

Airport staff: Follow the signs for Concourse D, then check the screens near the gate.

Traveller: Great. Has boarding started yet?

Airport staff: They are currently calling Groups 1 and 2.

Traveller: I’m in Group 3. Should I wait for my group?

Airport staff: Yes. Listen for the Group 3 announcement.

Traveller: Perfect. So it’s Gate D8, and I wait for Group 3. Thank you!

Four steps when the boarding information changes

01 · Check the board

“Is this still the correct gate for flight 418?”

02 · Find the gate

“Where can I find Gate D8?”

03 · Check your group

“Has Group 3 started boarding?”

04 · Act on a final call

“Is boarding still open for this flight?”

Airport vocabulary: Gate change means your flight is departing from a different gate. Now boarding means boarding has started. Boarding group or zone tells you when to join the line.

Final call: This is an urgent announcement that boarding is nearly finished. Go to the correct gate and ask an airline agent immediately whether boarding is still open. A final call does not guarantee you can still board.

Don’t confuse the times: Your boarding time is when boarding is expected to begin; your departure time is when the flight is scheduled to leave. Gate-closing times vary, so check with your airline and follow staff instructions.

Example: you’ve heard a final call

Announcement: “Final call for passengers on flight 418 to Vancouver.”

Traveller: Excuse me, I just heard a final call for flight 418. Is boarding still open?

Gate agent: Let me check the flight status for you.

Traveller: Thank you. I’m travelling on that flight. What should I do next?

Gate agent: I’ll explain your options based on the current status.
