Airport English · Missed connections · Real-life speaking
Missed your connecting flight? Here’s what to say.
Your first flight arrives late. You reach the airport, but your next flight has already left. You need help at the airline service desk. You don’t need perfect English: explain what happened, ask about rebooking, confirm the new flight, and check your bags.
Start with: “My first flight was delayed, and I missed my connecting flight. Could you help me rebook?”
Explain what happened
“My first flight arrived late. I missed my connection.”
A connection is the next flight you take during a journey with a transfer.
Ask for the next option
“Could you help me get on another flight?”
An airline agent can check your booking and explain which options are available.

Real conversation: missed connection at the airline desk
Traveller: Excuse me. My first flight was delayed, and I missed my connecting flight to Vancouver.
Airline agent: I’m sorry to hear that. Do you have your booking reference?
Traveller: Yes, here it is. Could you help me rebook?
Airline agent: Let me check what flights are available.
Traveller: Thank you. What’s the next available flight?
Airline agent: There may be an option later today. I’ll check the seats and details.
Traveller: Great. Could you confirm the departure time and flight number if it’s available?
Airline agent: Of course. I’ll confirm those details before we finish.
Traveller: One more question: what happens to my checked baggage?
Airline agent: I’ll check the baggage information for your booking.
Traveller: Perfect. Could you send me the updated itinerary? Thank you for your help.
Four steps to handle a missed connection
“My first flight was delayed. I missed my connection.”
“Could you check the next available flight?”
“What time does it leave, and what’s the flight number?”
“Will my checked bag go on the new flight?”
Real English tip: “I missed my connection” is a natural way to say you missed the second flight in your journey. Rebook means arrange a replacement booking.
Don’t guess: Repeat the new date, departure time, destination, flight number, and gate if one has been assigned. Check airport screens or your airline app again because gates and times can change.
Important: Airline assistance and rebooking costs depend on your ticket, itinerary, reason for the disruption, and applicable rules. Ask the airline to explain your options; don’t assume every missed connection comes with a free replacement flight, hotel, or compensation.
Problem → Need → Request
I missed my connecting flight.
I need to find another way to reach my destination.
Could you help me rebook the next available flight?
Put it together: “My first flight was delayed, and I missed my connection. Could you help me find the next available flight, please?”
