A conversation moves to something you do not want to discuss. You can ask to change the subject without explaining every reason. A calm sentence helps the other person understand that the topic, rather than the whole conversation, is the problem.
You can suggest another subject or leave a pause. If your first request is ignored, repeat it more directly or end the conversation. These examples are for everyday social situations. They do not tell you to withhold information you are required to provide in an official or professional process.
Six useful phrases
| What to say | When to use it |
|---|---|

A conversation to practice
Practice this fictional exchange with a partner. Change the details to fit your situation.
A: Why did you make that personal decision?
B: I would rather keep that private.
A: Oh, sorry.
B: No problem. How is your new class going?
A: It is interesting, actually.
B: What are you working on?
Notice the language
“Never mind” can mean the information no longer matters, rather than “Please stop asking.” If the topic is private, say that directly. You can redirect without making up an excuse or answering a question you prefer not to answer.
Four Finger practice
Say each line aloud using want to, have to, need to or might. Then change one detail to make it yours.
- I ___ keep the conversation comfortable.
- I ___ respect another person’s boundary.
- I ___ say I want a different topic.
- I ___ ask about their new class.
Sample answers
- I want to keep the conversation comfortable.
- I have to respect another person’s boundary.
- I need to say I want a different topic.
- I might ask about their new class.
Problem → Need → Request
I’d rather keep that private. Could we talk about something else? How has your new class been going?
Your mission
Choose a harmless fictional topic you want to avoid. Practice a gentle boundary, a firmer boundary and a new-topic question. Your partner should respect the first request.
