Airport English: What to Say When You Miss a Connection

Learn practical English phrases for missing a connecting flight, asking to be rebooked, finding your new gate, and checking what happens to your baggage.

THE BIG IDEA: Explain the missed flight and ask for the next available option.

Ten phrases to practise

  1. I missed my connection.
  2. My first flight was delayed.
  3. What’s the next available flight?
  4. Can you rebook me?
  5. Do I need a new boarding pass?
  6. What gate do I need?
  7. Will my baggage be transferred?
  8. How long is the delay?
  9. Is there another route?
  10. Where do I go now?

Use the Four Finger Rule

FLIGHT → PROBLEM → OPTIONS → CONFIRM

Start with the problem, then give the flight details staff request. Asking for rebooking does not assume a particular fare, entitlement, or outcome. Confirm the new flight, gate, and baggage arrangements before leaving the desk.

Put it together

“I missed my connection. My first flight was delayed. Can you rebook me? Do I need a new boarding pass?”
