THE GRIFTER’S GUIDE / SEA TO SKY ADVENTURE

11 / THE JOURNEY HOME

By Colin Lee MacLeod · October 2026 field edition

GOODBYE, WHISTLER

Good travel stories do not always follow the original plan. After our time in Whistler, we headed back along the Sea-to-Sky corridor toward Vancouver and eventually Vancouver Island. We said goodbye to the pod, the village and the fall mountain scenery. A comfortable bus ride south reminded us how useful it is to travel light and keep our onward options open.

BACK IN VANCOUVER

The return gave us another round of discoveries in Vancouver: a memorable sushi meal, a disappointing breakfast, and a haircut that came with a good conversation. Three very different experiences, all part of the same adventure.

SUSHI TODAY / 5 OUT OF 5

At Sushi Today on Hornby Street, I met a friendly Japanese chef from Takamatsu, where I had lived for a few years. We connected in Japanese, and he prepared a special eight-piece nigiri set. My verdict: “If you’re in Vancouver, must go.” The sushi was CAD $24.55 and my Asahi was $9.35 before tax. A full five out of five from this visit.

CELEBRITIES BARBER / A GOOD CONVERSATION

A friendly woman from Mexico gave me a sharp haircut, and we chatted in Spanish along the way. The cut was CAD $30 plus tax; I tipped $10. Great service and a very positive experience. A few words in another language can turn an everyday errand into a memorable part of the trip.

DENNY’S / THE BREAKFAST THAT MISSED

The traditional diner atmosphere and big menu looked promising, but the service disappointed me. Partway through my country-fried steak and eggs, I found the middle of the steak was ice cold. My final verdict from that visit: I would not go back.

THE ISLAND CONNECTION

Depending on the day and destination, compare BC Ferries, Hullo, Harbour Air and the buses connecting to their terminals. Check the full trip from downtown, not only the ferry fare. Do not assume ferry and coach timetables line up. Build in enough time to get from your coach stop to the ferry terminal.

WHAT THIS TRIP TAUGHT US

Plans change. A missed connection, a different bed, or a conversation with a stranger can become the best part of the story. Bring a charged phone, enough food, some flexibility and an open mind.

FOUR FINGER RULE / CHANGING YOUR PLAN

“Could I change my ticket, please?”

Problem: My connection changed.
