THE GRIFTER’S GUIDE / SEA TO SKY ADVENTURE

01 / THE HARBOUR CITY & THE CROSSING

BEFORE WE LEAVE THE ISLAND

The lands and waters around Nanaimo are part of the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, whose relationship with this place continues today. Coal mining reshaped the harbour in the 1850s, and Nanaimo was incorporated in 1874.

Our downtown snapshot: Commercial Street is easy to explore on foot; independent businesses, the harbour promenade, boats and floatplanes make the waterfront a great first stop.

OUR HULLO FIELD NOTES

The terminal and onboard facilities were good, and the ride was smooth. But the cabin felt crowded, and we could not get outside for fresh air. Stepping off directly in downtown Vancouver was a major convenience.

OUR BUDGET TIP

Allow around CAD $60 one-way; verify your final fare. This is our October 2026 field-note estimate, not a current booking quote.

OUR VERDICT: THE BEST CROSSING DEPENDS ON THE WHOLE TRIP

Hullo: best when the direct downtown arrival saves you a long onward transfer.
BC Ferries: our preference for the overall experience—outdoor decks, food choices, room to wander and quieter places to sit.

The Grifter’s Tip: compare the ticket, travel to the terminal, arrival transfers, time, luggage and comfort. A lower fare can still be a worse deal. BC Ferries’ Nanaimo routes go to Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen, not downtown Vancouver.

FOUR FINGER RULE / YOUR FIRST TRAVEL MISSION

Problem: You are heading somewhere new.
Need: The right ticket and clear directions.
Request: “Could I have a ticket to Vancouver, please?”

Ask one useful question before you board: “Could you tell me how to get downtown, please?” Listen to the answer, and repeat the important detail back if you need to check it.
