THE GRIFTER’S GUIDE / SEA TO SKY ADVENTURE

02 / WELCOME TO VANCOUVER

By Colin Lee MacLeod · October 2026 field edition

FROM HARBOUR TO BIG-CITY ADVENTURE

Vancouver stands on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. The city was incorporated in 1886; its port and rail links accelerated growth. Today its neighbourhoods, waterfront, mountains and diverse communities make it a wonderful place to explore on foot.

GETTING AROUND WITHOUT A CAR

SkyTrain: Fast cross-city rail; Canada Line reaches YVR. Tap in and tap out.

Bus: A wide local network; bus rides are charged as one zone.

SeaBus: Passenger ferry between Waterfront and North Vancouver.

Taxi and rideshare: Compare the estimate before booking.

On foot: Downtown is walkable, but consider hills, weather and luggage.

WHERE SHOULD WE SLEEP?

Hostel: Usually a dorm bed with social spaces; useful for solo budget travellers.

Hotel: Private room and more services; usually costs more downtown.

Motel: Practical roadside-style lodging; less common in central downtown.

Short-term rental: Apartment or room; compare total fees, rules and location carefully.

OUR FIELD REVIEW / HI VANCOUVER DOWNTOWN

1114 Burnaby Street, West End. Our four-bed dorm cost approximately CAD $73 total on our visit. Clean, comfortable and easy to check in; privacy curtain, USB charging, bedside features and a simple free breakfast. An excellent base for walking around the West End and waterfront. This is our field-note price, not a current booking quote.

THE GRIFTER’S TIP

Compare the full cost: nightly price, taxes, cleaning fees, transit to your destination and breakfast. A cheaper room far from downtown can be expensive once you add transportation and time.

2026 TRANSIT SNAPSHOT

As checked with TransLink on October 22, 2026, adult one-zone fares are CAD $3.50 cash/contactless or $2.85 Compass stored value; an adult DayPass is $12.55. A single fare is valid for 90 minutes. Cash bus transfers cannot be used on SkyTrain or SeaBus. Check the official fare page before travelling.
