THE GRIFTER’S GUIDE / SEA TO SKY ADVENTURE
03 / VANCOUVER ON A BUDGET
By Colin Lee MacLeod · October 2026 field edition
THE MORNING AFTER
After a lively night out, we checked out our hostel breakfast. It did the job but didn’t make a big impression. Feeling a little haggard, we headed into daylight to explore Granville Street: food from around the world, thrift shops, bustling blocks and plenty of opportunities for people-watching.
OUR CHEAP EAT
Chào Mámì Express, inside Granville Station, served us a mini beef pho for CAD $4.25. Field verdict: “Fucking killer!” A real budget discovery, not a claim about today’s menu price.
MAKE YOUR OWN DISCOVERIES
The best budget day is not always a checklist. Look at the signs, try a new place, strike up a respectful conversation, and pay attention to what is actually worth the money.
THE SOUP QUEST / OUR BUS JOURNEY
1. Downtown: explore Granville Street and grab a budget bite.
2. Bus #50: our field route was a #50 toward South Vancouver.
3. Granville Island: get off near the island and walk toward the market.
This describes our journey; check current routing before travelling.
FOUR FINGER RULE / ORDERING CHEAPLY
“Could I have the mini beef pho, please?”
Problem: You are hungry and watching your spending.
Need: A small, affordable bowl of food.
Request: “Could I have the mini beef pho, please? Is tax included?”
