THE GRIFTER’S GUIDE / SEA TO SKY ADVENTURE
04 / HIDDEN VANCOUVER
By Colin Lee MacLeod · October 2026 field edition
FROM INDUSTRY TO CULTURE
Granville Island was formed in 1916 using material dredged from False Creek. Once an industrial waterfront area, it was reimagined as a public destination; the Public Market opened in 1979. The industrial character is still part of its charm.
WHAT WE EXPERIENCED
The market felt lively and international, full of visitors and conversations. There were food stalls, shops, live music, and excellent places to sit outside with coffee and look across the water. On our visit it felt clean, comfortable and welcoming. Always respect people’s space when practising languages.
THE STOCK MARKET / OUR CHOWDER STOP
We tried clam chowder at The Stock Market for CAD $10. It was ordinary and felt slightly overpriced for what we got. The outdoor waterfront seating was the bigger highlight. These are our firsthand impressions, not a universal rating.
VANCOUVER PUBLIC LIBRARY / CENTRAL BRANCH
One of the surprise highlights was the giant downtown library. An impressive nine-floor architectural landmark, it offered somewhere to stop, sit, recharge our devices and reset. We especially liked the rooftop garden. A tremendous practical resource for travellers without a hotel room to retreat to.
THE GRIFTER’S TIP
Libraries are not just for books. When you travel on foot, a welcoming public library can mean a quiet seat, information, workspace and a chance to recharge. Check current opening hours and facility access before making plans.
FOUR FINGER RULE / FINDING FACILITIES
Problem: Your phone is nearly out of battery.
Need: A safe place with a power outlet.
Request: “Excuse me, could you tell me where I can charge my phone, please?”
